Marta Hristea – Romanian Music Tales

Marta HristeaAward winning singer songwriter Marta Hristea is mainly known for her contribution to jazz music in Romania. The rich music heritage of her country compelled her to rediscover old songs from different regions, Wallachia, Transylvania and Moldavia and give them new life in modern interpretation. Haunting ballads with languid modal melody of byzantine reminiscence and strange asymmetric rhythms make Romanian music difficult to capture within the Western tonal criterion.  However, the blend of Marta’s improvisation skills with traditional songs of specific vocal technique renders an original, up to date, sincere interpretation of the Romanian folklore.

Among her releases, the albums “Transylavanian Grace” (2000, Not Two Records), “Colinda Noastra” (2004, Green Records) and “Lina” (2007, Green Records) cover carols and laic melodies from rural yesteryear Romanian village.
