Marta Hristea – Romanian Music Tales
Award winning singer songwriter Marta Hristea is mainly known for her contribution to jazz music in Romania. The rich music heritage of her country compelled her to rediscover old songs from different regions, Wallachia, Transylvania and Moldavia and give them new life in modern interpretation. Haunting ballads with languid modal melody of byzantine reminiscence and strange asymmetric rhythms make Romanian music difficult to capture within the Western tonal criterion. However, the blend of Marta’s improvisation skills with traditional songs of specific vocal technique renders an original, up to date, sincere interpretation of the Romanian folklore.
Among her releases, the albums “Transylavanian Grace” (2000, Not Two Records), “Colinda Noastra” (2004, Green Records) and “Lina” (2007, Green Records) cover carols and laic melodies from rural yesteryear Romanian village.
Calligraphy Club are a Lincoln based Bluegrass/Old Time band featuring Jack Hobohm on mandolin and Robbie Caswell-Jones on guitar. The duo's close vocal harmonies and skilled musicianship applied to traditional American folk songs and some modern covers creates a fresh acoustic sound that will have you tapping your feet!
The Lincoln-based Whitworth Brothers (Thom and Rich) and James Poole fuse the spirit of gypsy swing with the flair of flamenco to create a distinctive jazz flavour.
Jo Veal and Andrew Swain – French Folk
Jo Veal (clarinet) and Andrew Swaine (accordion) play self penned tunes with passion, energy and sensitivity for both dancing and listening. Their music is inspired by the french folk music scene, with hints of klezmer and the english folk tradition intertwined. Beautiful tunes with a highly improvised style. Andrew is also an experienced ceilidh and Playford dance caller, and Jo performs in various other projects, including ceilidh band Hekety, french folk trio Outre Manche and Balkan influenced band, the Bell Hagg Orkestar.
